I'm thinking that when Techtool created the eDrive it made another partition (#4) and somehow can't locate the start up volume (#3).
#TECHTOOL PRO APPLE INSTALL#
I rebooted from the TTP Install DVD and removed the eDrive from my hard drive, ejected the DVD and restarted only to get as far as the white start up screen and spinning grey logo. I tried mounting the normal Start up volume but had no luck. It recognized my hard drive, showed my normal Start up Volume - grayed out and also showed the eDrive - not grayed out. I re-booted using the Tiger install disk to run Disk Utility. I also tried booting up from the eDrive but got the same result. After a while the laptop just shut itself down. I'm sure that the 2 sources have something to do with what's going on here.Īfterwards, I rebooted using my Start up disk but the boot up process got as far as the white screened Apple Logo with the gray spinning progress circle.

When asked to select the eDrive source volume and Mac OS source volume I chose the only options available from the drop down menus (Mac HD and Mac HD).

After reading the eDrive section, I decided to install an eDrive on my start up disk.
#TECHTOOL PRO APPLE MANUAL#
After reading it's manual I rebooted my laptop using the TTP Install DVD to run some tests. Since Cocktail offers a fully functional demo, download both and see which you like best.I needed to defrag my hard drive and discovered that Norton System Works no longer works with the latest Mac OS so I went to the Apple Store and picked up Tech Tool Pro. (Similarly, OnyX does a few things Cocktail doesn't.) Your $15 (shareware) also gets you a slightly more elegant interface.

Maintain's Cocktail is very similar to OnyX in most respects, though it can do a handful of things that OnyX can't, such as optimizing network settings for the type of connection you have. For instance, you can choose from a long list of Unix commands, from a2p to ypserv, and display the relevant manual ("man") pages.

OnyX also provides access to hidden or obscure Mac OS X options. The Automation feature will do all of the above in a single click. The free OnyX from Titanium is a multifunction system utility that offers a host of essential system maintenance tools, including the ability to verify and repair system permissions run a complete system optimization script to increase your Mac's overall speed clear your cache, browser history, cookies, recent searches, CrashReporter logs, log files and so on and view your Mac's hardware info. OnyX's Automation tab lets you perform several maintenance routines at once. These are tools that should be installed on every Mac - and Apple didn't include them, so here's where to get them yourself. Here's my list of the 22 must-have apps for the Mac in 11 different categories, plus a few bonus apps worth the download. I'm not referring to the full-fledged applications almost everyone needs, such as a word processor or spreadsheet program, but rather the kind of inexpensive program that makes using your Mac easier, safer or more fun. The addition of a few select utilities can fill in some of the missing pieces in your Mac tool kit or extend the capabilities of the built-in tools. Which isn't to say there's no room for improvement. On top of that, Apple's included Disk Utility can diagnose and fix the most common threats to the smooth operation of your hard drive. Many system maintenance tasks are handled by Mac OS X's own built-in, Unix-based routines that clean up old files, monitor the health of your hard disk and more. It's got an assortment of software already installed, including a top-notch browser (Safari), a fine instant-messaging program (iChat) and an industry-standard media player (QuickTime). When you buy a new Macintosh, it comes pretty well equipped.
